Rumors have been confirmed. After 20 years, the sequel to the Matrix is now in Development.
According to an exclusive published by Variety; Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the movie which script (developed by Lana Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon, and David Mitchell) already seems to have some degree of Development.
The film will begin production next year and will feature Neo and Trinity as well as other characters from the Matrix universe. The film apparently follows the events of Matrix Revolutions.
It still unknown whether Lilly Wachowski will be involved in the production or direction of the film; although Lana acknowledged that her sister's participation was crucial to the creation of the Matrix universe:
"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,"
Warner Bros. has explored the possibility of exploiting this franchise for years, but a series of legal obstacles had prevented the company from shooting a new movie:
So far, neither Lana nor any of the parties involved have revealed more details about the film. However, the news that Trinity would play a part in the movie is already generating discussions because (spoiler alert: LOL) at the end of Matrix Revolutions, she dies.
Variety assures that Lana's script "drummed up excitement." And although there are no spoilers, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich strongly praised Lana's creativity while announcing this film:
"We could not be more excited to be re-entering 'The Matrix' with Lana. [She] is a true visionary - a singular and original creative filmmaker - and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing, and producing this new chapter in 'The Matrix' universe."
Matrix became a cult film for its philosophical explorations and amazing special effects that used cutting-edge technology to marked a turning point in the industry.
Without a doubt, the bar is set at a very high mark for this movie —which is already gaining a lot of hype around it.
