Artificial Intelligence has grown from being the staple of science fiction to modern-day reality. It is not some expensive armory reserved only for elites and rich conglomerates too; AI has grown so rapidly it is now on our fingertips. Here, we review the top 5 common applications of AI around us.
1. Facial Recognition
We live in a golden age! (Well, the likes of Picasso would have said the same thing too, regardless) We are quite fortunate to be at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence, and right at its promising inception.
Facial Recognition comes first in our list of everyday AI applications, and it wouldn't come as a surprise too. If anyone claims they are yet to see any real application of facial recognition or have trouble recognizing areas where it has been implemented, we only need to mention a few.
At the core basis of it all, every time you take a selfie, AI is probably one of the reasons you come out just as beautiful as you are. Most smartphones in recent times now have their cameras integrated with certain AI models you most likely don’t need to know. The AI-driven cameras now know better to focus on your face than the bee hovering over the yellow flower behind you. This is why you might sometimes catch the green, blue, all-types-of-color boxes squaring your face as you try to take a picture. This is one of the most common implementations of AI at the grassroots.
Other instances of facial recognition you might have come across with could be Facebook’s popular DeepFace program that makes it super easy to tag your family and friends.

2. Text Suggestion and Predictions
Artificial Intelligence covers a wide range of areas that are not only limited to images or facial learning. This includes the processing of textual data which is commonly referred to as Natural Language Processing (NLP).
The most common and obvious example of text prediction we can observe is probably Google’s and YouTube’s. Google is most certainly conspicuous in the way it learns patterns, even personal curated patterns. Google search box suggests search queries even before you are through with typing the first word in your query.
But this is not the most amazing aspect of it, the interesting aspect (and probably disturbing as well) is the fact that Google suggests queries based on your previous searches and other pieces of information it knows about you like your location, interests, sites visited, etc.
In other words, Google's search box is intelligent enough to know when I type ‘pyth—’, I am interested in programming suggestions rather a reptilian enthusiast who types the same thing.
Cool? Maybe not. AI can be creepy too.
If you want to know how creepy AI can be, type ‘I am’ in your local text box on your smartphone and see what your smartphone keyboard suggests as the next word. Mine is ‘Great!’.
3. Language Translation
In 2019, we do not need to worry now when we stumble against cool Russian websites or websites written entirely in Arabic but have the information we desperately need. Especially when we have Google Chrome (even more disconcerting that Google is at the heart of everything, this is another story for another day).
Through AI, any form of text in languages other than English can be easily transcribed into English and vice-versa. All you have to do it is ‘translate page' on your browser, and you are ready to read Russian or Hungarian information in the comfort of your home.
4. Augmented Reality
Not many live in the electrifying atmosphere of Japan, but other countries now have a significant amount of augmented reality ads even on streets and on football fields. Augmented reality injects virtual or computerized elements into the everyday world or the ‘real world.’
Augmented Reality is heavily used in Google Glass—a specially designed spectacle that helps autistic kids to interact more comfortably in social situations.
AI has one of its best implementation in the field of Health and Medicine. With developments in deep learning and artificial intelligence, cutting edge technologies are now being developed to solve delicate medical cases with great speed and precision.
For example, there are now AI-driven machines that could just as easily and accurately predict the presence of cancer tissues itself and also diagnose ailments and disease that could be incredibly difficult or tiresome to diagnose.
These are only a few implementations of AI in the present world; there are countless many and perhaps more complex integrations. We should only be glad it could only get better!
